Early Life: Jordan Belfort Beginnings

Belfort and his close childhood friend Elliot Loewenstern earned $20,000 selling Italian ice from styrofoam coolers to people at a local beach before he completed high school.

Belfort intended to use the money earned with Loewenstern to pay for dental school, but he left after the dean of the school said to him on his first day: “The golden age of dentistry is over. If you’re here simply because you’re looking to make money, you’re in the wrong place.”

Jordan Belfort’s Career

Belfort became a door-to-door meat and seafood salesman on Long Island, New York. He reports that when he started, the business was prosperous; in a short amount of time, he employed multiple workers and was selling 5,000 pounds of beef and fish per week. At 25, he went bankrupt as a result of his business’s failure.

He found a job at L.F. Rothschild as a trainee stockbroker. However, he was laid off after the 1987 Black Monday stock market crash. This didn’t stop Belfort, who was hooked on making money like the more senior stockbrokers. In the late 1980s, he worked for a few financial firms, learning all he could.

Jordan Belfort founded the Stratton Oakmont firm in 1989, with the help of his partner Danny Porush. The company was a brokerage firm located on Long Island, New York. Belfort and his employees were engaged in illegal activities, such as money laundering and stock manipulation.

The firm used a high-pressure sales tactic called “boiler room” to sell penny stocks, and many of its employees became very wealthy. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) began investigating Stratton Oakmont in 1989, and in 1996, indicted Belfort and Stratton Oakmont for securities fraud.

Belfort served 22 months in prison. Since then, he has written a memoir about his experience, entitled The Wolf of Wall Street. He has also been the subject of a major motion picture by the same name.
