Motivation is the force that drives us to take action and achieve our goals. It can come from within ourselves (intrinsic motivation) or from external sources (extrinsic motivation). But what are the factors that influence our motivation levels? And how can we use them to boost our performance and satisfaction?

In this article, we will explore five key drivers of motivation that can help you and your team stay focused, engaged, and productive. These are:

  • Purpose: Why you do something. It means that what you do should match your goals, values and dreams.
  • Autonomy: This means that you can choose what you do at work and it should fit with your skills and interests.
  • Mastery: The opportunity to learn new things, improve your abilities and overcome challenges.
  • Recognition: When someone notices and appreciates your work. They will tell you how good a job you did. It shows that what you do has an impact.
  • Connection: The sense of belonging and trust you have with your colleagues, managers and customers, and how it fosters collaboration and support.

Let’s look at each of these drivers in more detail, and see how they can help you motivate yourself and others.

Purpose

Purpose is the answer to the question “why am I doing this?” It is the ultimate goal or meaning behind your work, whether it’s in your professional or personal life. Therefore, having a clear purpose can help you stay motivated because it gives you direction and a way to measure your progress. 

Have you ever asked yourself “What am I passionate about?” If so, here are some tips on how to find your purpose: 

1. Connect With Your Values & Passions:

Think about who you are and what matters most to you. What do you value? What makes your heart sing? What activities bring joy into your life? Write down your values, passions, and interests then explore ways to incorporate those into what you do every day. 

2. Reflect on Past Experiences & Achievements:

Look back at times when you felt most fulfilled in life – these could be moments at work or anything else that made an impact on your life. Ask yourself, “What was I feeling during those moments of accomplishment? How did I contribute to make that happen?” The answers will give insight into what makes you feel alive and inspired as well as where your strengths lie. 

3. Set Goals For Yourself & Track Progress:

Once you have identified what drives and motivates you, use that knowledge to set goals for yourself by breaking them down into smaller steps so they are achievable within a short period of time. As important as setting goals is tracking progress towards each goal – this will show whether or not these goals align with your overall purpose in life.

4. Seek Out Influencers & Mentors:

Sometimes we need guidance from people who have already gone through the process of finding their own sense of purpose in life – these could be influencers, mentors or people in our network who have achieved great things by tapping into their own unique gifts and talents – ask them questions about their journey.

5. Reach Out To Your Community:

Get involved with local charities or participate in community events – giving back helps us gain perspective on our own lives while also strengthening the bond between ourselves and others around us which leads to increased levels of happiness and fulfillment over time!  

Autonomy

Autonomy is not only a great way to stay motivated and inspired but it also helps us to take ownership of our work and results. As an employee, it’s important to have some degree of autonomy over your work so that you can express yourself and make decisions based on your own preferences. But how can you increase your autonomy in the workplace? Let’s explore the different ways you can do this. 

Communicate with Your Boss Regularly 

The key to increasing autonomy is to communicate regularly with your boss or supervisor. Ask them questions about their expectations, be open and honest about what you need from them, and discuss any issues or problems you may be facing in order to reach a mutual understanding. By being transparent with your boss, they’ll feel more comfortable in trusting you to take on more responsibility and tasks that require a higher level of autonomy. 

Set Clear Goals 

Another way to increase autonomy is by setting clear goals for yourself. This will help you focus on what needs to be done in order to achieve these goals without having too much interference from others. Additionally, by setting clear goals, it will be easier for your boss or supervisor to gauge your performance and give feedback accordingly. 

Take Ownership of Your Results 

Finally, taking ownership of your results will help demonstrate that you are capable of handling difficult tasks independently. Doing this shows that you are reliable, responsible and trustworthy – all qualities that will help build up trust between yourself and those responsible for giving out tasks as well as granting additional autonomy when necessary.  

Mastery

Mastery is the opportunity to learn new things, improve your abilities and overcome challenges. It is the desire to grow and develop your skills and knowledge. Having mastery can help you stay motivated because it stimulates your curiosity, challenges your potential, builds your confidence, and increases your competence.

We are going to break down how to enhance mastery for yourself as well as how to encourage others around you to find their own mastery. 

For Yourself:

To begin enhancing your own mastery, start by taking an honest look at where you already have some mastery or competency in a particular area or skill set. Take time to appreciate what you have already achieved and the progress made so far; use this as a motivator for further improvement.

Once you have identified areas where you would like to increase your level of expertise, break down what needs to be done into manageable steps with achievable goals in order to reach mastery level.

As these goals are met, reward yourself for reaching each milestone with something that will keep you motivated towards further success such as a treat or even just some words of encouragement from yourself.

Finally, track your progress along the way so that when eventually reach the mastery level you can appreciate all of the hard work that went into achieving it! 

For Others:

When encouraging others who are looking for their own form of mastery it’s important firstly to identify any areas where they may already have competency or experience in order to build confidence in themselves and also provide them with positive feedback on any successes they have had so far.

Secondly, encourage them to break down large tasks into smaller ones with realistic goals; this will help them stay focused and motivated along the way while not becoming overwhelmed by the task at hand.

Lastly, provide support throughout their journey by offering advice if needed or simply being an active listener which will help them stay motivated until they reach their desired level of success.

Recognition

We’ve all experienced the power of recognition and how it can help us reach our goals. From the feeling we get when someone compliments our work to the elation of receiving an award, recognition is an essential driver of motivation. But have you ever stopped to think about how you can make recognition a driver for yourself and for others? Let’s discuss what it takes to recognize yourself and others in order to motivate success. 

How To Be Recognized

First and foremost, the most important way to get recognized is to do excellent work. If you want people to notice your efforts, you need to put in the effort—which means showing up on time, meeting deadlines, going above and beyond what’s asked of you, and always striving for excellence. You should also be proactive in seeking recognition.

Ask for feedback from your peers or supervisor so that they can recognize your accomplishments. Don’t be afraid to self-promote either! Letting people know what you have done will raise awareness of your efforts and will likely lead to more recognition down the line. 

How To Recognize Others

It’s just as important (if not more so) to recognize others as it is to be recognized yourself. Recognizing other people’s contributions motivates them by making them feel valued and appreciated. A simple “thank you” or “great job” goes a long way but there are other ways too; try giving public praise during team meetings or award certificates or badges that demonstrate the person’s hard work.

You could also suggest rewards like bonuses or extra vacation days—small gestures that show employees that their contribution is appreciated go a long way towards motivating success in the future.

It’s no secret that feeling connected to your colleagues, managers, and customers is important. We all crave a sense of belonging. But did you know that connection is actually a powerful motivational driver? That’s right—feeling connected can do more than just make us feel good; it can actually motivate us to greater heights. Let’s take a look at how connection fosters collaboration and support in the workplace, and how you can build and strengthen those connections. 

The Benefits of Connection 

Connection creates trust, which leads to better communication, collaboration, and ultimately innovation. When teammates feel like they belong and are trusted by their colleagues, they become more willing to open up about new ideas or challenges they are facing. It also encourages them to take risks without fear of being judged or reprimanded. This kind of trust creates an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves freely—and that leads to greater creativity, problem-solving skills, and productivity overall. 

How To Build Connections 

Building strong connections starts with fostering a culture of respect and appreciation for everyone in the workplace. Here are some tips:  

• Make sure everyone is on board with expectations—set clear goals for yourself and your team so everyone knows what you need from each other 

• Show genuine interest in others—ask questions about their lives outside of work

• Demonstrate empathy—try to understand their feelings or point of view

• Offer feedback—do it in an encouraging way that shows you want them to succeed

• Show appreciation—be generous with praise when someone performs well or helps out

• Foster open communication—encourage people to express their thoughts without fear of judgment.

Intrinsic motivational drivers vs. extrinsic motivational drivers

What is Intrinsic Motivation? 

Intrinsic motivation is when we do something because we find it enjoyable or rewarding. It’s the type of motivation that comes from within ourselves and drives us to do what we love—or simply what we want to do. For example, if you’re passionate about painting, you may be intrinsically motivated to create art even when there is no external reward or recognition for doing so. 

What is Extrinsic Motivation? 

Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, comes from external factors like rewards or punishments. This type of motivation typically includes tangible incentives such as money, grades, or prizes. It can also include social recognition like compliments or praise from others. The idea behind extrinsic motivation is that if you do something with the expectation of receiving an external reward, then you will be more likely to complete the task.                       

How Can They Help Us Achieve Success? 

Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivations have their advantages and disadvantages when it comes to achieving success in any endeavor, whether it’s work-related or personal. While intrinsic motivation can help us stay focused on our passions and drive us forward without external rewards, extrinsic motivators can provide much-needed encouragement during difficult tasks or projects.
